CHALLENGE

After whittling down our product concept we saw our challenge as the following:

HR tools like Workday + HCM cloud, provide new hires with basic onboarding documents (such as training)

However, there are limited onboarding tools that support the creation of company culture, and help employees feel that they belong to a bigger /existing community.

PRODUCT HYPOTHESIS
SOLUTION

A web application which allows for new starters to be buddied up with an existing employees, based on shared interests and skills.

Once paired, employees are able to plan team activities alone and with their buddy.

An onboarding tool will help foster feelings of inclusion and limit experiences of isolation for new hires.

This tool will also help retain  new and existing staff.

Background + RESEACRH SUMMARY
60% of Gen Z employees feel isolated at work + 41% of them plan on quitting within 6 months.

Surveys show that since March 2020, company new joiners, who have been part of an organization for >1 year, have struggled with feelings of isolation at work; of that, 60% belonged to the Gen Z demographic.

This was followed by Millennials and Gen Y, where 54% of this demographic reported feelings of disconnect and isolation from working at home.

These feelings were the leading reason why 41% of the workforce surveyed were considering quitting their jobs in the next 6 months.

Sources also showed that there is an increased emphasis on HR and business owners to focus on employee wellbeing and retention as we continue to work remotely. This research confirmed our product idea of BudUp!

key users
Gen Z employees need a tool to help them feel included. HR and existing employees need a tool to retain employees to reduce current retraining and onboarding rates.

Drawing upon our research, we outlined the key users for BudUp! And why they would adopt this tool.

FEATURE MAPPING
Features like personal profiles, task outlines + talking to buddies are assumed to aid feelings of inclusion.

As a team we brainstormed features for BudUp! that would help new joiners feel included. we came up with these suggestions by asking, what features on a web app would help feelings on inclusion at work.

We then voted on the concepts that were most achievable to design and build with the time that we had.

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS

To test whether our features were viable we found key competitors to see whether there was a gap in our product/ features. We found that there are many onboarding tools, but none that had all the features we desired to incorporate within our MVP:

  • Matched buddies

  • Suggested planning fun team/ business activities

  • Rewarded completed tasks

  • Integrated with popular systems (an ideal feature not included in MVP )

There are multiple onboarding tools, but none of them encouraged wellbeing + feelings of inclusion.

WIREFRAMES

Heuristics, competitor analysis to support user flow outlines.

Once we concluded with the product features, I began to wireframe our user flow.

I presented back to the team and applied the placement suggestions that they had, which were minimal.

Key features within wireframe:

  • Adding interests, skills + about me

  • Buddy pairing

  • Selection of activities to plan with a buddy

  • Selection of activities to plan  alone

  • Suggest adding new tasks to the system

  • Task completion rewarded with badges

  • Integration with popular systems

UI Design

Heuristics, competitor analysis and UI kits to support final design.

Due to time constraints, we were unable to obtain research on the features that the Gen Z persona best interacted with, on hosted platforms. Because of this, we used heuristics and competitor offerings to support our MVP designs. We also utilize a UI kit to produce the final designs.

The high fidelity designs were used to create a prototype, which was then presented and handed over to the development team, along with the design and brand guidelines who build a basic MVP using HTML and CSS.

TEST

Time constraints for testing.

Due to the timeframe of this project we were unable to test this tool with our end users, thus iterations were not possible.

If we were able to measure initial success of our MVP we would look at customer satisfaction rates, and adoption rates to see the volume of matched buddies marking tasks as complete.
